Very Underwelmed

Tipp 9/17/2019

I've owned and operated this 'soundbar' for almost 2 years now and to say that I feel duped would be accurate. Buyer BEWARE! The device while awesome with ATMOS content is a complete bore for other interactions. The hoops one has to jump through to get sound out of it are not worth the high price-tag. I thought that going Samsung all the way with my TV and Blu-Ray would make this an awesome threesome. Disappointed in support for firmware to resolve inadequacies and overall fact that with 500W of speaker power I can't get most movies via DirecTV / Netflix / Streaming to produce significant volume. I think this item taught me a lesson to never buy again without seeing it perform in person. This one's going to end up on ebay!

Awful Value - Rarely Works Fully

Istanbully 8/4/2019

Rear speakers continually cut out and produce static. As does woofer. Lack of options to optimize sound. My Visio that I got for $400 is far superior.

Doesnt work

Bought this sound bar with 3k Q9fn, s9 mobile and a couple of r1. Over 5k in the hope they would work well together.. They are rubbish! Loss sync with rears all the time takes literally hours to resync. I'll go with another company next time wish I hadn't bothered with Samsung!

Product died, now Samsung will not help

dolmann 4/30/2019

My soundbar quit connecting to the wireless speakers and subwoofer a few months after purchase. I spent days trying everything suggested by the people on the samsung support site and online forums to no avail. Now the product is out of warranty and they will not help me. It was a few days out of warranty when they informed me finally. I'm very dissappointed. I own thousands of dollars in Samsung products. I will not be purchasing another in the future.

Basically no Dolby Atmos

DisappointedInLA 2/15/2019

This is advertised as Dolby Atmos soundbar. However, the ONLY way it will playback Dolby Atmos is if you patch the sound and video through the sound bar. This means that the soundbar has to sit in the middle of the signal path of your video source and your TV. Well, most of us have smart TVs that have 4K apps ON THE TV and that is where we get our 4K/Dolby Atmos programming from (the 4K Netflix app, Vudu App). So, the problem is that this soundbar will not decode any Dolby Atmos sound that comes from your TV via ARC. Google this problem and you will see many. many people have this issue. Samsung has REFUSED to issue any statement on why this is not working and has REFUSED to offer any software updates to the soundbar. For a product at this price, this is unacceptable. I even tried to get an answer from Samsung at the CES convention in Las Vegas in January 2019 and they did not have anyone there to talk to me about the soundbar product line.

Mess Up Soundbar

deeghost 2/11/2019

On paper, this device is great! But in reality, it's very buggy. Wireless speakers and subwoofers have serious issues... Difficult to pair and never works for me. What's worse is that Samsung support never got back to me after submitting my support request, even after several emails, chat and of course, you are never able to get them on phone... I'm so disappointed as a customer who buys a lot of Samsung products, that I have decided to reconsider my patronage to Samsung products.

Bad Pairing Mechanism and Horrible Support

matrixuser 1/13/2019

If there was a lower star than 1 I would have given that... I bought my K950 soundbar just over a year ago (moving from a Bose, which already has a strong pedigree in sound; in hindsight a big error). The unit bought had issues with pairing and turned out to have had defective side speakers... I return that and due to the listed features and claims by Samsung of how good the soundbar, I went ahead to buy another K950. Sound was rock solid as was advertised. Soon after, I had to move location, and the pair of small satellite speakers and subwoofers have since failed to link to the soundbar... Every troubleshooting in the book has been done. After several weeks of pulling out my hair, I filed an online SR [2199769004] for which I never got any response or support... A few weeks afterward I followed up with support, I have still not heard from them. This going on to 3 months... Horrible SLAs, support and customer service. And a horrible device that has so many issues..

Good system for the $$$ ?

Sound man 1/3/2019

OK , I gave a 4 star rating since I am more pleased with the system then not . Had this for about 1 year now and what my overall thoughts about this is this,,, Good system at a high cost for what you get . Mine worked right out of the box with no issue. I originally used a Fiber optic cable to connect to an older TV . Once I got this to it's permanent home , HDMI was used . 4K UHD Bluray's are fantastic for both Sound (with Dolby Atmos) and Image( I have a 65" QLED 8C) .... along with the Samsung 9500 Bluray player ... Set up was a breeze using all Samsung components . 1 thing I've noticed when viewing Bluray's with Atmos is this bar only scrolls the Dolby Atmos indication 1 time ...If you miss that , you've missed it . Even the Bluray player doesn't state in "plain terms" which is what , only , Example , 7.1 , 5.1 and others for different languages . My understanding is with Atmos(in this system) X.X. 4 is the number of speakers for Atmos in the system . No indication with This was listed in this system ...... Did the firmware update and do not see anything different . Call CS and was told it fixed "bugs". Did nothing that I could hear and since No issues were present , fixed nothing . When looking into why this system doesn't have EVERY type of major Sound format , of if updates would happen , I've discovered a major flaw ... Nothing is happening for us owners of these Soundbars .. Newer Soundbars are available and it appears to be the same mind set ... What you got is all what you will get .... So , Even though a find sounding system , it does lack in areas where non-Dolby Atmos is used .... That's to bad for the current owners , but doing do diligence by READING might be helpful to those who feel getting as much as they can when buying things in these price ranges Should be helpful ... The biggest (in all my readings) is the lack of the rear speakers volume and lack of control of their volume . IN TV watching mostly they are not of much use or effect . 4K Bluray's can be much better ,depending on what you're watching ...

Samsung Refuses To Update This Soundbar

Hard8times 11/14/2018

It's really sad that you spend all this money on this soundbar (K950) and Samsung refuses to give it a DTS X update or even a DTS HD MA update. This was not a cheap soundbar at all but Samsung has already abandoned the product in hopes that we would give in and get the new N950, but that won't be the case I'm going to Sony cause unlike Samsung they still support and update their older products which is why their ST-5000 Dolby Atmos soundbar got an DTS X update even though it's a older product that shows that they actually care about there customers which I can appreciate

Much better than expected!

Watchjohn 6/11/2018

After years of listening to TV and movies with a modest 5.1 system, I decided to try something new. Not having a huge budget, I was looking for something that would 1) sound good, 2) look nice and 3) not break the bank. So off I went to do some research. The store I went to, had various systems setup and I was able to see and hear what they would sound like. I tested a few 5.1 and 7.1 systems and they were nice … but out of my budget. Then I moved to sound bars, but nothing struck me, that is, until I heard this Samsung system. I was blown away by the sound. Voices were clear, music was beautiful and action clips were off the charts. The price was still more than I wanted to spend, but I figured "okay, I'll tighten my belt for a few months .. this is worth it" When the system arrived, it took about 30 minutes to setup the sound bar, subwoofer and rear speakers. The beauty of this system is, once you turn it on … everything connects automatically! So now the real test, how would it sound in my home .. answer GREAT, I absolutely love this system. Well done Samsung!

No atmos via HDMI-ARC, no dts:x support

Kuba 2/16/2018

- no dolby atmos support via HDMI-ARC, so basically even if your TV supports atmos, you won't be able to use it. Of course, you can use blue-ray players or Xbox One (Netflix app), but it's not the thing you expect when you buy a flagship product - no dts:x support - surround speakers disconnect from time to time (for around one second) - in general, you can save around $500 and get a similar soundbar without atmos

Dolby Atmos is phenominal (once you get it to function)!

AtmosLover 2/11/2018

I struggled to understand why I wasn't hearing dolby atmos on my HW-K950 soundbar which was connecting to my Samsung UBD-KM85C ultra HD Blu-Ray and my Samsung UN55HU 7200 UHD TV. I was watching a DVD that was clearly labeled Dolby Atmos. I followed precisely the HW-K950 setup guide as follows: Dolby Atmos sound can only be decoded via HDMI at the TV side. Use HDMI with ARC to connect. Blu-Ray player needs to be connected to the soundbar and the settings should be changed via the following steps: Blu-Ray Player Settings> Menu > Sound > Digital Output > Bitstream (unprocessed). But still no Dolby Atmos. The soundbar acknowledges Dolby Atmos by displaying a blue led bar on the front top right side and by scrolling the words "Dolby Atmos" across the LED display. The solution was to purchase HDMI cables that are HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 quality. The movie was distinctly different and much better sounding as was the sound in general when playing music from YouTube or streaming Netflix. The cables that came with my samsung devices were not capable of delivering Dolby Atmos.

spellbound with the atmos experience, amazing room filling rich sound

RavikanthVanapalli 2/7/2018

Got my soundsystem delivered yesterday. 1) Connections were super simple. Super happy 2) Couldn't get the dolby atmos up and running right away. My assumption was SUHD8500TV connected to soundbar will produce atmos directly. This wasn't the case. Customercare wasn't able toguide properly on this matter and wanted me to return the sound bar. After reading through forums, I was able to get atmos working. TV <->soundbar<->xbox 3) Atmos was up and running, truly blown away by the experience. The best sound I've ever heard. 4) 5.1 sound works perfectly. Sounds are coming out from everywhere. 5) Amazing subwoofer, room shakes. Worth the money, if you are looking for compactness and wirefree surround sound. Con's ------ 1) Atmos should be supported on all connections and not only on hdmi. as long as source can send raw bitstream, player should be able to upscale to atmos and play. 2) TV -> atmos sound bar connection should output atmos, instead of using xbox or someother audio source. Samsung rocks !!

Great soundbar with some caveats

Paceman90 1/17/2018

I've had this soundbar for around six months now and overall have been very happy with it. The Atmos is excellent with sounds coming from all over the room and thunderous bass from the sub. I like the design and the wireless speakers feature. I really like to crank up my movies and this item has no problem handling my desire to go deaf. As well, I like the Samsung Multiroom app tha allows you to update the system and make adjustments with the equalizer. That said, there are drawbacks which are impossible to ignore for a consumer, but don't seem to be important to Samsung. 1. DTS:X. Everyone mentions it, everyone wants it, yet we still don't have it. I'm not sure why Samsung can't provide a firmware update to rectify this glaring omission, but as another reviewer stated: doing so would dramatically increase the satisfaction amongst users. Dolby Atmos is becoming more prevalent on discs and in streaming, but we really miss out on having the best audio option available for films like the Harry Potter series, Serenity, and Apollo 13. 2. Connectivity with the rear speakers. Another common theme in reviews and on message boards for this soundbar is the fact that the rear speakers can be troublesome at times. It's always been an easy fix for me, personally: I just turn the system off and back on and that usually gets things back in working order. For the first time, I experienced an issue with the sound going out altogether three times while watching Blade Runner 2049 in Atmos last night. I haven't seen anyone else mention this, so I assume it is the soundbar. Again, this is the first time it's happened, so I'm hoping it's not a recurring problem. While I love the look and sound from this product, it would be hard for me to recommend it for anyone who takes movie-watching seriously. But anyone who would be in the market for this soundbar would do just that. I'm begging you, Samsung. Give us DTS:X... please! You did great by implementing DTS with the last firmware update, so please reward those of us who have invested in your product with the whole enchilada. Then, I can give the K950 the score it deserves.

K950 Soundbar

Atlantis17 9/12/2017

This unit is pretty impressive when it works correctly. That is the problem...It does not always work as designed. The rear speakers are silent most of the time until ATMOS kicks in or really good Dolby 5.1. This makes it hard to hear normal TV. I had an issue with the unit "self" adjusting the volume from its original 50 being MAX volume, going to 100 as the MAX volume. I also ran a 4K Atmos disk in my 4k Player, and ATMOS never kicked on...I currently have the sound bar in to be looked at by the Samsung Repair Desk, also, I am connected, per Samsung recommendations, a Fiber Optic cable from my TV to the Soundbar, and the Cable box and 4K blue ray connected via HDMI to the TV....Hope this helps folks...Rich

Haven't been able to get Atmos playback working

HJMiami 8/14/2017

I just bought the HW-K950 system and hooked it up via HDMI to my Samsung 75" 4K tv set. I've tried using the Samsung Smarthub apps to test the Dolby Atmos sound but apparently none of the tv's apps will produce Atmos sound. I called Samsung tech support and they had no idea about this issue either. They made me try the different hdmi connections on both the tv and the soundbar (hdmi1, hdmi2, hdmi ARC). Then they told me that I had to use optical cable to get Atmos to work but the soundbar's manual clearly states that Atmos only works with HDMI, not optical cable. After testing with the TV's built-in Netflix app with the movie OKJA and Youtube app with Atmos content they finally told me that I had to use a Blueray player to get Atmos to work. I dont' know if this is true or not because they told me so many different things. So far I can't tell if the sound system is really great because the rear speakers sound so low that I can't hardly hear them. I guess I will have to buy a blueray player and some Atmos supported movies to really test this system. I hope that Samsun updates the TV's built-in apps with Atmos sound in the future because most users no longer buy discs for their content and just use streaming services.

Lack of Dolby Atmos and Vision Via HDMI ARC

CouchPotatoAU 8/11/2017

While the sound might be pretty good for a bar with conventional 5.1 content this bar has one major issue. it does not support dolby atmos or vision processing via the HDMI ARC. This is a huge oversight considering most 2016 & onward smart TVs support dolby atmos / vision streaming apps (netflix / vudu / amazon etc). So there is no way for this sound bar to receive dolby atmos signal via its ARC HDMI connected to your TV. The sound bar does not support Dolby Vision pass thru either, only HDR10. So anyone with a Dolby Vision UHD bluray player cannot pass the DV signal through the sound bar. This means you have to have 2 HDMI outs from your UHD player (1 to go to the soundbar and the other to your tv). Pretty embarrassing stuff really from Samsung, they should take a really hard look at themselves if this is the best soundbar they can come up with.

Rear Speakers do not Work / No Connectivity

RoshDawg 7/9/2017

The rear speakers (incl. sub woofer) are always losing connection. I have tried every trick in the book and manually connected them over and over again. Their range is next to nothing, and will flash blue or stay a solid red for their connectivity status and not play a sound. For those rare times when I move the speakers really close immediately after manually connecting them, you may occasionally hear a faint sound coming from them, even after playing a Dolby Atmos program on supported devices. I suppose my 150 mbps internet and router next to the TV is causing interference, but I need that for my gaming and streaming. The speakers are of good quality, but the software and connectivity hardware are NOT up to par. I couldn't even imagine how someone could buy this before they came out with basic 5.1 DTS support.

Atmos will not work

GamerBrent 5/7/2017

My sound bar will not process atmos. I have been troubleshooting this for well over a month. It plays other Dolby formats just fine but it will not process atmos. I have followed all instructions perfectly but the bar will not display "atmos" on the front and the blue led will not light up like it's supposed to and no sound is played when an atmos soundtrack is sent to the bar. I have contacted samsung and the guy had no idea how the sound bar worked at all. Very disappointed as I can no longer return it to best buy....

GremlinX 4/27/2017

PRO: I will agree the sound in ATMOS is GREAT! CONS: I have had times when the sound shuts off completely or the speakers loose their sync I have to shut everything off to recover. I do not get the ATMOS detection Blue LED in the display and on some ATMOS 4K Blu-Ray disks I get no sound and sometimes I'll get and error that states my HDMI input doesn't support UHD. The Bitstream unselected sometimes does not function, ie on the Movie Passengers and I've tried two discs. I also would like to have the other DTS formats available.

This product is great!

Yamun7 4/14/2017

I would recommend this product to my family as well as my friends. I really liked the sound quality, especially the effect of the subwoofer. Thank you Samsung for creating such great products. Always.

Good for Dolby Atmos......Average for anything else

Prevo 1/16/2017

I returned the complete Bose soundtouch 300 system for this. Main reason for the Bose return was no Dolby Atmos and the wifi connection was always disconnecting. Other than that it sounded great. Now for this sound bar package. This is great when playing Dolby Atmos content. Bass is booming and surround sound is almost unmatched. The problem is that there is no dts or dts true hd support. The sound bar does an ok job at playing the foe 5.1.4 when movie mode is engaged and surround is on, but it's no where close to sound you get with Dolby Atmos. Also normal viewing with direct tv which supports Dolby digital 5.1 is very disappointing also. Netflix and all other streaming apps are the same also. You can barely hear the rear speakers and have to crank up all the settings on the speakers and also the volume to get descent sound. It's a night and day difference when playing Dolby Atmos content compared to anything else. Samsung needs to fix this. There's no reason this system can't support everything other than Samsung just doesn't want to provide the firmware update. This is a big deal breaker especially for the price. I purchased at Best Buy and am an elite member so I have 45 days to return. If Samsung doesn't provide an update for this I will be returning. The Sony Dolby Atmos sound bar coming out shortly is supposed to support everything. I'll probably return this and wait for that one to come out unless Samsung fixes this issue.

Love/Hate review

CLmaster 11/24/2016

I love this system and at the same time it can be a pain a lot of times. The sound is amazing, it's well built, it's easy to install and looks beautiful. Also music sounds brilliantly on this system. At the same time it has a lot of problems: 1) It doesn't do a great job connecting through ARC. First I had a Vizio TV, it kept connecting and disconnecting, I could lose the signal of the Blu ray movie 30 TIMES! during the movie. The same happened with Bluetooth and Wifi. I decided to replace my system and also buy a 2016 Samsung TV. The problem improved but there are still great annoyances. Everytime I raise the volumen too fast it makes my Samsung TV crash. It's crazy that 2 Samsung products don't get to work properly together. 2) Like a lot of people describes, there's a persistent hissing of the 2 back speakers in most of the content and they don't sound that good. They're amazing for Dolby Atmos content, but that's it. 3) THE MOST IMPORTANT FLAW: NO DTS X or 5.1 compatibility. So I always keep looking for a few movies compatible with Dolby Atmos, because half of new releases aren't compatible. I already replaced this system once and I'm still not sure if I want to keep it. Samsung should fix the DTS compatibility issue and the ARC problem ASAP.

Samsung HW-K950 Review

USMCCPL 11/20/2016

Sounds great but frustrating to not have DTS 5.1/7.1 or DTSX Support. Hoping Samsung adds DTS 5.1/7.1/X Support. Would be quite frustrating if Samsung adds DTS Support in next year's model and claim it a "new feature". Last, the rear speaker hiss when not in use and can get annoying. Besides the lacking of DTS 5.1/7.1/X Support and the rear speaker hiss the soundbar is great but definitely feel like it can be improved upon.

Release Update for DTS Master Audio

Ferchini 11/19/2016

If you are playing Dolby Atmos (blue LED), sound is outstanding. If you are playing DTS Master Audio. You will be unhappy customer. Sound quality is terrible - rear speaker are very low in sound effect. Playing movies @ stereo sound, it is not cool at all. Release update and fix this issues. To many unhappy customer for this great design.

Great sound bar, not so great rears and no DTS 5.1

flimbs 11/16/2016

Sound bar portion sounds amazing. Subwoofer is loud (a little to boomy in my opinion though). Lack of 5.1 dts is annoying is you plan on watching blurays. The main reason for 3 star review is even with latest firmware, and turning all speakers to -3 and rear speakers and rear upward speakers to +3 I cant get enough volume out of the rears to be noticeable. Also the rears hiss (maybe affected by wifi router?) Honesty the hwk850 may be a better choice because of this. If Samsung patches them to be adjustable to be louder or adds dts 5.1 support I will update my review.

Good, but it needs upgrade.

Skisan 11/16/2016

THE GOOD: The HW-K950 can hardly be considered a mere "soundbar" because it is actually a full Atmos sound system, with rear wireless speakers and subwoofer. The sound quality is superb and when ATMOS is activated, look out: it will blow you away with full, rich, clear and truly immersive sound with plenty of power to back it up. The soundbar, itself, is hefty, containing eleven speakers (9 frontal and 2 ceiling pointing) and it is long, measuring 4' across. . You need a good size base upon which to set it. The two rear speakers produce great sound and also have ceiling firing speakers. In the ATMOS mode they really kick it. THE BAD: Incredibly, this great sounding ATMOS system loses its appeal when playing 5.1 and 7.1 DTS Master Audio. It only plays in stereo and uses the rear speakers as weak duplicates of the front. This is a MAJOR lapse in engineering and really needs to be fixed quickly. A friendbought the system and returned it for that very reason. And I'm still undecided, since so many Blu Ray disks default to 5.1 DTS MA. And since ARC is used I am a little disappointed that I have to read the menu screen on the soundbar, which is small. Lastly, while the sub-woofer produces an immense bass, it borders on being too bassy, even with a -12 option. OVERALL: I like the system and would really love it if Samsung just went all the way and, instead of giving us two-channel DTS, I mean, really, two channel?, gave us a fully abled sound system that played the two major sound formats.

Bought 1 didnt work, got replaced didnt work

JamesNLucy2001 11/3/2016

Was really excited about this soundbar. 500 Watts and Atmos!!!! Got the 1st one and hooked it up as per instructions> Samsung K8500 4K blu ray player and cable box to sound bar via hi speed HDMI cable and ARC out to ARC TV. Set TV sound out correctly. Got no audio or video. Re-checked connections and cables.. Put cables back into TV HDMI ports and ARC to ARC. Got Video, but no sound.. Contacted tech support from vendor I bought from and Samsung..Conclusion: bad Soundbar HDMI port. Sent replacement.. Got it all hooked up.. Woofer and speakers wouldn't pair. Contacted Tech support again.. conclusion: Stuck in store demo mode. could not reset. So, I returned the other one as well. Not sure if I just had bad luck, as the other reviews I read were all positive but....... On a good note, the 4K blu ray player, although expensive is absolutely fantastic. Too bad.. REALLY wanted this but now will look at another Manufacturer.

Atmos is really great, others are just okay

tgarg 10/28/2016

The atmos feature of this soundbar is really great but the sound from the rear is very inferior and almost non-existent. I have tried netflix 5.1 and a lot of other 5.1 sources and the rears are almost useless. For the price, you might be better off getting a proper home theater system. Or, Samsung please provide an update to fix this issue and make this soundbar universally amazing.

Does not work with Nvidia Shield TV

vincebk 10/10/2016

This soundbar is not able to play TrueHD streams from the Nvidia Shield TV. This is unfortunate since the Shield TV is one of the few streaming devices that supports Atmos over TrueHD.

Dcfly040 9/20/2016

This is a nice addition to my home theater system. It looks great and sounds good. Bought at a good deal but not cheap. See my "con" below. I like the sub woofer that can rattle the windows but this one doesn't. You can hear it but not feel it.

No DTS?

Tiu1 8/26/2016

Product returned to Amazon because it lacked DTS. My fault I guess but my assumption was it would be included since this is a premium product and top soundbar released from Samsung that included the latest Dolby Atmos. At this price point it should be included. Luckily I found out early because a couple friends were going to get this but they won't because DTS is not included.

ATMOS = Amazing, everything else is average

SeattleOprah 8/23/2016

The good things: - ATMOS is really impressive - Very powerful The bad things: - Terrible dead air/hiss sound from rears when no audio being played - No Support for DTS X or 5.1 DTS track (Only DTS 2.0) - Multiroom App is unfinished and buggy (has potential) - No dedicated input buttons on remote, requiring to scroll through inputs(makes programming Harmony Remotes a pain)
